Audition

Interested in joining Elektra Women’s Choir? We are always looking for highly experienced and skilled choral singers. Auditions are usually held in August and January, but can be arranged at other times of the year. Please read the following information prior to contacting Bernice Slemko, Elektra's General Manager.

Guiding Statements
Elektra’s mandate is "to inspire and lead in the choral art form through excellence in performance and the creation, exploration and celebration of women’s repertoire."  Under the leadership of Artistic Director, Morna Edmundson, Elektra inspires a strong following through consistent excellence in performance, a rich palette of sound, and open and professional presentation of who we are and what we do.

Before You Audition
If you feel you are a good fit with Elektra’s style of music (check out our recordings on this site),  contact Elektra's General Manager and introduce yourself and your choral singing experience. All singers selected for an audition will be sent the choir’s schedule in advance, and are asked to consider how Elektra would fit into their life. Joining Elektra is a big (and rewarding) commitment and full participation is required of all singers.

At the Audition
Prospective singers will be auditioned by the Artistic Director.  At the audition, you will be asked to do basic vocalization and range testing with piano accompaniment; present a song of your choice (accompanist provided, please bring an extra copy of the music); and sight-read a song of the Artistic Director’s choice. Note that Elektra is a classical choir, so the solo song should demonstrate your classical vocal technique.

If You Are Accepted
Successful candidates will be invited to join Elektra for a probationary period which may last for up to four months, at which time the Artistic Director will inform the singer of her status. When accepted into Elektra, singers will be asked to agree to the terms of the singer’s manual. Any singer who has been on leave for more than one season will be asked to re-audition prior to rejoining the choir.

Singers’ Fees
The 2010-2011 annual fee for Elektra singers is:

$213 plus society membership ($25 tax-receiptable)

Total: $238

People who are newly (i.e. for the first time) admitted to Elektra in January will pay 75% of the singer fee, plus the full society membership fee.

Total: $185

Fees may change subject to review at annual general meetings. Fees will not be pro-rated for unsung concerts.

Costume Fees
Singers will give the choir a $100 deposit for their costume. This deposit will be refunded when the singer leaves the choir and returns the costume. In addition, singers will also pay, for as long as they are in the choir, a $25 annual rental fee.

Rehearsals
Elektra rehearses Mondays from 7 - 9:30pm during September - June. Rehearsals are usually held at Ryerson United Church, 2195 West 45th Ave, Vancouver.
